The Art Cabinet mediates by its green wallpaper, painted paneling and doors, furniture and more than fifty paintings in dense baroque hanging, the Art Cabinet mediates a glance of its former glory. In addition to works by important Dutch painters of the 17th Century, two portraits by Lucas Cranach the Elder as well as images of the Dresden court painter Johann Alexander Thiele are represented. The latter, who lived from 1727-1739 in Arnstadt, served as supervisor of the art collection of the royal couple. Its large landscape brochures on the first floor of the New Palace, including a view of the "Drei Gleichen" and "castle and town of Sondershausen" are evidence to the virtuosic skills of their painter.
